What is The Secret of Hillier Lake ?

Have you ever wonder that existence of lake but not blue as usual. There is a lake in the world and sometimes it can be seen as pink. Let's discover what is the secre of this pink lake.

When viewed from above, The pale pink surface of the Hillier Lake, which is shimmering in the distance, looks like a colorful cream on a cake. The lake adds a very different color to the coasts of the Middle Island covered with lush forests. The Middle island is one of more than a hundred small islands that make up the Recherche islands that stretch along the southern beaches of Western Australia. This salty and shallow lake is about 600 m wide and looks like it was taken from a fairy tale book. Surrounded by a lush forest of eucalyptus and Cajeput trees, the lake is surrounded by white salt clumps.

The pink color of the lake was investigated in 1950 by a group of scientists hoping to find a seaweed called Dunaliella Salina in the water. This type of seaweed produces red pigment in very salty waters and colors other pink lakes of Australia, such as Lake Esperance. On the other hand, no traces of seaweed were found in the water examined from Hillier Lake, so the color of the lake remained a mystery.

The first record of this pink lake in the Middle Island dates back to 1802. British seafarer and hydrograph Matthew Flinders stopped by this island on their way to Sydney. After the flinder's visit, some went to the island for economic purposes. Between 1820 and 1840 seal and whale, hunters settled on the island. Also, salt started to be extracted from the lake from the beginning of the 20th century. However, salt production lasted only 10 years and there have not been many people coming to this island since.
