The most incredible and important discovery for the year 2019 was this black hole in the messier 87 galaxies, 55 million light-years away. The black hole was viewed by the Event Horizon Telescope and the world's first black hole photo taken as history. This discovery confirmed the hypothesis of Albert Einstein.
It is 40 billion km wide and three million times the size of the Earth, and 6.5 billion times the mass of the Sun.
"What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System," said Prof Heino Falcke of the Netherlands Radboud University, who suggested the experiment.
The image shows a very bright "ring of fire". It becomes brighter, overheated gas falling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy - so it can be seen so far from Earth.
The edge of the dark circle in the center is where the gas enters the black hole, which is an object with a large gravitational attraction, and even light cannot escape.
