How strong is the dog's
sense of smell?
You know that dogs are loyal
friends of humans. Since ancient times, dogs became one of the most beloved
helpers. Generally, people used dogs as protection for their homes, farm, and
herd. Actually, it is valid for today too. Also, there are different of areas
can be dogs are used. For instance, we can see the dogs helping the narcotics
cops and sometimes helping blind people. It is perhaps one of the most
domesticated animals since the earliest times of humanity.
These special animals have
one prominent feature among their other features. Their nose! Their sense of smell is so strong that they
are used by humans. When dogs are working with cops they can detect the drugs
with their noses. What is the secret thing in their nose and what makes them
very powerful? Let’s find out together.
Why are dogs’ noses so strong?
Dogs have 2 specialized regions in their noses. One of the regions for breathing and the other one for smelling. When dogs sniff something, the molecules reach the smelling region in their nose. In this region, nearly 200-300 million olfactory receptor cells exist. Compared with the human nose, which has just 5 million this can be one of the main reasons why their noses are so powerful.
There are lots of
specialized parts in the brain, each of them important for each special sense. Like
vision, hearing, touching, taste, and smell. The level of development of these
regions may differ in each living thing. As you expect, the smelling region
called the ‘olfactory bulb’ is highly developed in the dogs’ brains.
The importance of noses in vision
Dogs can see and observe the world with their eyes. Also,
with their sense of smell, it can be more meaningful. So, dogs use their noses
to color the world. When they smell something, it enhances visualization and
also helps to find the location for next time.
While dogs are looking for something, it also allows them
to smell the previous location of the things they are looking for, visualize
what they are looking for in their minds, and find the place they go to.
Also, they can detect feelings, like anger, love, sadness,
and threat. In this way, they can respond to various emotions.
